Dog of the Month For October, 2006
Sadie
|
I'm Sadie, a full-blooded, non-AKC recognized, Albemarle Collie (my full
name is Sadie, Pretty Colleen of Albemarle). They didn't know that
at the SPCA in 2000, though; they called me as a sheltie mix, and even
though I
was a skinny little 20 lb girl, they put me in the noisy big-dog room. No room at the inn, I guess, or at least no room in the little-dog room..... That's how it goes sometimes at shelters, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw my Mom walk in. The problem was, she didn't seem quite sure that she was my Mom at first. I put on my best sweetheart attitude, and turned on the charm whenever she came back in to check on me again. When she took me out on a walk, I couldn't help myself - I looked down the road to see if my old family was coming back, but they weren't, so I was hers for the keeping. She brought the whole family to meet me and I got to go home with them. Now I have my very own boy and girl! Six years later, I've filled out a bit at 25 lbs. I can't put on too much weight though, because I'm an athlete - I've taken agility classes and loved them! |

Fiona
|
Fiona the pug hails from Arkansas and was born in April 2006. She
was one of a litter of seven and faced hardship early when her mom decided
that seven pups was one too many to feed. Luckily, she was quickly transferred
to another litter of two pug pups and quickly made herself at home where
was able to feed, grow and thrive.
In July, Fiona came to live in Charlottesville and since her move to the area, she’s enjoyed frequent trips to Richmond, Hopewell and the surrounding countryside. Fiona recently returned from a week long trip to the coast of Maine where she frolicked in the cool air and discovered a fondness for blackberries. Fiona’s Likes:
her stuffed elephant, her cat Sabrina and blackberries

Brinker

So, what was a sweet Keeshond boy like me doing at the Augusta County SPCA?
I don’t know what I did to deserve it, but I can tell you, it did a number
on my stress level. Thanks to the Internet and my Dad’s interest in keeshonden,
I got noticed! When Mom first came to see me, was I ever nervous. My tail
stayed tucked between my legs and I couldn’t even eat the treat she offered.
Things changed really fast - one minute I was in this noisy kennel, and
the next, I was in a crate in the back of a station wagon heading east
on 64.
I had some health troubles at first - after all, I’d been through 3 different homes (counting my birth home) and a shelter, and stress & exposure can really do a number on a sensitive boy like me. Here I was, 2-1/2, unneutered, unhousebroken, and had lived outdoors all my life. Then I came down with kennel cough, and I had a GI disorder - from stress and poor nutrition, probably. Through it all, my family and the folks at Rover’s Recess kept working with me. It’s amazing what love and care can do for a dog: I’m healthy now and have a family, a dog sister and even cats (and you know the saying - where there’s a cat, there is cat food and a litter box!) and am fulfilling my destiny of being a companion dog. I just wish Snowy ("Fierce Kitty") would stop using me as a cat toy! My old name was Casey Kees, but when I got my new home, I became Brinker van der Shenandoah, aka the Biedermann. You can call me Brinker, or you can call me Mr. B, or you can call me Biedermann… just don’t call me late for dinner! |

Nolin
| Nolin
is a mixed breed who was born on the streets of Puerto Rico, where he developed
a love for Spanish food, particularly chicken burritos, which he still
eats as an occasional treat to this day. After being rescued and transferred
to a shelter in the US, Nolin was adopted by his adoring mom, who resides
in Charlottesville.
Now, Nolin lives a life of ease and luxury, where he spends his days taking long walks with his many neighborhood friends and keeping watch on the world from his window seat. Nolin loves people, other dogs, cheese, pushing blueberries around the kitchen floor with his nose, his stuffed elephant, car trips and snuggling. Nolin dislikes: the vacuum cleaner, being brushed and cats (he is terrified of them!) Nolin is happy to be appointed Dog of the Month! |

I was born in West Virginia in the spring of 2005. My mother was an Australian
Sheppard. I have her Blue Merle coloring, her intelligence, and her herding
instincts. I’m not too sure about my father. I have a smoother coat than
mom, long legs, a long curved tail and a tendency to point. I guess he
might have been one of them mangy no account West Virginia hound dogs.
One thing we know for sure, Papa was a rolling stone; all he left us was
alone. The last time I saw my brothers and sisters was Father’s day
weekend when I was shipped to Winchester, VA. That’s where I met my new
owners, Amber, David, and Marie. They took me to my new home in Columbia,
Maryland.
I’m really smart and I’ve got this basic dog thing down pretty good. You know: sit, shake, down, high five, stay, come (let’s not talk about the squirrels), and kiss (don’t ask, it’s that Marie and her Pretty Puppy, Pretty Puppy, Pretty Puppy). I have never had an accident in the house. I only chew my own toys. (Well, once when I was little, I ate the wire that charges the weed wacker. Hey! No one told me it was wrong). Every morning I carry the newspaper up from the end of the driveway. When I wasn’t much bigger than a pair of balled-up socks they put a bamboo stick across a couple of two by fours and taught me to jump over it. Now you can put a board between the backs of two garden chairs and I won’t even break a sweat going over. I eat my smart puppy kibble and dog biscuits. And when I do good things I get pupperoni and pieces of cheese. I always thought cheese was the greatest food in the world. But now I have this skin infection and they are giving me my capsule of antibiotic in a ball of warm melted cheddar. Now I think cold cheese is like, for cats. And of course, I will follow you thru the Gates of Hell for a spoonful of salmon. I walk down to the lake at least twice a day. In the mornings, if I’m lucky, I see my best friend, Zena, and we go crashing thru the woods and streams together like the two reckless teenagers we are. It’s even more fun than when I chase the deer at dusk. Summer is coming and I am excited because I have my own swimming pool and sand box in the garden. It’s not a bad life. I think if the cats had a vote I would be gone but I suspect I’m going to be here for a while. Ripley |
