Dogs of the Month
for
May, 2004

This month, the Dog of the Month comes as a pair!

Rommel und seiner kleine Schwester!
                     Guten Morgen, Liebhaber!
 Rommel and Nietzsche
Nietzsche
Two and a half years ago, without even meaning to, we stumbled upon a lucky find.  At a local pet store, we met a male dachshund puppy, fell head over heels for him, and brought him home.  We named him General Rommel.  He fit into our lives like a glove.  He has a wonderfully charming disposition, and loves to play with dogs of all shapes and sizes. For Rommel's first birthday, we considered getting him a baby sister.  However, the discussion went no further.  Approximately a year later, we were "surfing the net" and discovered a dachshund breeder less than five kilometres away!  We gave them a call.  We were thrilled to find out that they in fact had a twelve week old, female, red, smooth hair, dachshund.  The very next day, Nietzsche came home with us.

Nietzsche and Rommel hit it off right away! Within the first week, Rommel and Nietzsche began to demonstrate to us what a wonderful idea it was to bring home a puppy! They quickly learned how
to share toys, play gently, share their parents time and energy (lots and lots of energy)

They spend their days in a cozy, stylish, puppy friendly room that only very spoiled dachshunds
would come to expect and deserve.  Among the pooch luxuries they enjoy is "wiener dog" artwork hung of course, at dachshund eye level.  We customized our back yard as well. We built a ramp off our deck to make it dachshund accessible.  It's definitely a conversation piece.

Nietzsche follows Rommel every where.  She's like a clever, spunky, cuddly, curious, shadow that's 1/3 his size.   Rommel is so cool that he barely lets his "puppy frustration" show.  He's certainly been a gentle, well mannered, big brother.

I'm Sadie, a full-blooded, non-AKC recognized, Albemarle Collie (my full name is Sadie, Pretty Colleen of Albemarle).  They didn't know that at the SPCA in 2000, though; they called me as a sheltie mix, and even though I was a skinny little 20 lb girl, they put me in the noisy big-dog room.  No room at the inn, I guess, or at least no room in the little-dog room.  That's how it goes sometimes at shelters, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw my Mom walk in.

The problem was, she didn't seem quite sure that she was my Mom at first.  I put on my best sweetheart attitude, and turned on the charm whenever she came back in to check on me again.  When she took me out on a walk, I couldn't help myself - I looked down the road to see if my old family was coming back, but they weren't, so I was hers for the keeping.  She brought the whole family to meet me and I got to go home with them.  Now I have my very own boy and girl!  I even have 2 cats - Buster & Snowy.  Buster's gray like a squirrel, but Mom tells me he most definitely is not one and that I may not chase him. And you guessed it, Snowy is all white!

I've filled out a bit since I was adopted, but  I can't put on too much weight, because I'm an athlete - I'm taking agility classes and I love it!

Sadie!

Ace is a joy to be with.....
........a real Valentine!
Ace just turned 9 years old on January 10th, and was adopted from the Arlington Animal Rescue at 8 weeks old.  My name was fourth on the list, so they told me not to get too hopeful.  The first person did not qualify.  The second prospect qualified, but took another dog.  The third person took Ace home and returned her the very next day with no explanation.  I guess we were meant to be together.  She truly is a junkyard dog, especially when I'm home!  She's very strong willed, skittish, and very smart, but does commands on her own time (like a cat!).  Ace sheds 365 days of the year, but she is loved anyway.  She's my best friend.

Morgehn

Morgehn, a spayed terrier mix, is about 2 ½ years old. Her humans adopted her in Memphis, Tennessee from Guardian Angel Pet Rescue. She truly must have had guardian angels because she was at the Memphis Animal Shelter for over a month before she was rescued by the Guardian Angel volunteer. Animals at that facility are usually euthanized after 7 days.  Her rescuer named her Daisy but her new adoptive parents felt that Morgehn (Scottish-Gaelic for “from the edge of the sea”) better described her near death experience. Her humans also lovingly call her, “Little Miss Marple” because she is such a wonderful mystery to them!

Morgehn is a joy to have in their lives. She charmed her humans the moment they saw her at the Adoption Day. She makes them  smile with her sparkling personality and “rain ears.”  She loves to chase squirrels and once thought some deer she chased had run up into the tree as the squirrels did.  She was literally “barking up the wrong tree!”
